None this week! Reading: Books contain a lot of information, and this week our focus was on filtering out only the important stuff. What do we need to know? What can we let go of? Determining importance is something every reader needs to do well. Writing: This week we finished and finally printed our narrative story, and we are are to writing our next piece. The kids will be working on paragraph and essay structure as they write an opinion essay. Math: The class has been working very hard in math, and when I introduced 4x1 multiplication this week, it was no problem. They picked it up early in the week and spent the rest of the time practicing to iron out mistakes. Science: Energy travels in waves, and the kids were looking at those waves all this week. Social Studies: We learned about the five major US regions this week, and the kids will continue to learn about those as they read books in our guided reading groups during reading time. Announcements:
We will be doing Halloween parties and activities on November 1st. It's a half day, and the district has decided to do costumes and parties on that day. I will be sending out several reminders as we get closer to Halloween. Reading: A good reader uses detail that an author gives and creates a movie in their head, and that is what we practiced this week. Visualization is a very important tool for understanding text, and the kids did a great job with it. Writing: We put the finishing touches on our stories and started printing this week. I hope to speed the process up on our next piece! Math: Multiplication is hard and requires a lot of focus, and the class did a fantastic job of that this week. We are multiplying 2 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers, something that's not as easy as it sounds! Everyone is doing a great job though, and next week we'll get into 3 and 4 digit numbers. Science: Force, motion, and momentum were on our list to explore this week, and the kids learned some interesting things. Ask them about energy and what they learned about balls rolling down ramps. Social Studies: We can learn a lot from maps, and that's just what the kids spent this week doing. They learned to read climate, elevation, and population density maps in order to learn more about the United States. Announcements:
I am looking for a few volunteers to set up a Halloween activity for the class. Usually I have parents bring in a little snack and a craft for the kids to do, and I then I have some other educational things that we do to celebrate. If you'd like to volunteer to bring in a craft or a snack, let me know, I'd love to have you in! We will be doing Halloween parties and activities on November 1st. It's a half day, and the district has decided to do costumes and parties on that day. I will be sending out several reminders as we get closer to Halloween. Reading: Our focus this week was asking questions about what we read, but not just any questions. Good readers are always asking questions that help drive their understanding forward. Ask your student to demonstrate! Writing: We spent this week typing away! Hopefully we can publish our first story soon. Math: This week in math we had a very basic introduction to multiplication. We're taking things very slow because it's going to get pretty tough! Specifically, we learned what arrays and area models are as well as how they relate to multiplication. Once that was done, we learned how to multiply by multiples of 10. Science: The kids have been busy making magnets this week. What's a temporary vs. permanent magnet? What's an electromagnet and how do you make one? Ask your little scientist! Social Studies: We have started a short research project on man-made features of the United States to better learn about what people around the country have built and why. Announcements:

Reading: Schema was our comprehension skill this week. Schema is everything we have in our heads that we use to interpret and understand the words we read. Ask your kids what their schema is for schema! Writing: Rough drafts are coming together on our first narrative story, where we are learning about story elements and publishing our writing. Math: Review was the name of the game this week, because we have a math test on Monday! You should have seen a practice test and a self reflection sheet come home on Thursday. They should already know what they need to focus on, so give it a look this weekend! Science: We did a neat experiment this week looking at what happens to the strength of magnetic fields as they get farther and farther apart. Ask them what happens. Social Studies: There was not a lot of time for social studies this week, but we are beginning to look at major US cities and why they were founded where they are. Announcements: Conference times went home today in Friday Folders. If you sent in a slip but didn't get a time, get in touch with me and I will send you your time. The book fair is next week, and our time is Tuesday. It will be open during conferences. We will be doing Halloween parties and activities on November 1st. Reading: This was our first real week of reading groups, and they went very well. The kids practiced using metacognition again, and they will be ready to move on to our next skill, schema. Writing: Rough drafts are coming together on our first narrative story, where we are learning about story elements and publishing our writing. Math: Subtraction was our focus this week in math, and we'll be having a quiz on tuesday. Look for a practice test to come home on Monday! Science: The kids are still investigating magnetism, specifically looking at magnetic fields and how they interact. Social Studies: We finished our landform unit this week, and will be looking at human made landmarks of the United States next week. |
