I've sent home a note about the Christmas party. We'll be having a breakfast and a craft, and I'd love to have parents join in to help do the craft and hand out breakfast. It should be in the Friday folder. Our spelling test and spelling bee will be on Tuesday of next week. Reading: One of the most difficult skills to pin down when reading informational books is finding the main idea and its supporting details. We worked on it all this week, and the kids did a pretty good job. We'll be circling back around to it from time to time as the year goes on. Writing: The kids are about halfway through writing their persuasive essays, where they will be trying to convince the principal to make a variety of changes through the school. They're shaping up pretty well, so be on the lookout. Math: Multiplication is finally behind us! Well, not really, because we're starting division. Being opposites, we'll be using a lot of our multiplication knowledge to understand and do division. Social Studies: There's a whole new unit for us now, and it's economics. This week we learned the basic idea of what an economy is and what the three big questions every economy is concerned with. See if they know what those questions are! Announcements:
Our math test has been moved until Tuesday to give the class a little more time to prepare. Study guides went home last Friday. We ran out of time for our spelling test this week, whoops! We were too busy getting new seats. Reading: So far this year we have been focusing on how good readers read, and what it means to read and understand text. This week we finished up that whole unit with synthesizing, which is the idea that when we read new material we add it to what we already know, and this is how we learn and grow our thoughts. Writing: Having learned to structure a paragraph last week, the class started coming up with an idea to write a persuasive essay about and generated a few reasons that they will argue for in their papers. Math: Word problems are very difficult, so we spent a whole week learning how to deal with them. Regular multiplication, comparisons, and multi-step word problems, we hit them all! Social Studies: This week we did our last bit of research on the Great Lakes region and learned a little about the other regions of the United States. Announcements:
Students in my class will be going to science with Mrs. Leach from now on, ask them what they've been doing! We have a math test on Friday. The kids should have a study guide/practice test in their Friday Folder. Reading: One of the hardest skills a good reader must learn is how to make an inference. This week, the kids learned how to take clues from a book and combine them with their schema to learn something that the author might not tell them. Writing: Before we start our new writing piece next week, the class has been learning how to structure a paragraph. Math: I can officially declare our class masters of multiplication! The kids did a really good job this week learning and practicing 2x2 digit multiplication. Next week we will tackle putting those skills to use in word problems. Social Studies: The Great Lakes are a wonderful natural resource, and we learned some basic facts about them this week before diving into what makes the Great Lakes Region special next week. |
