Spring Break is here! Have a great week off! Reading: Understanding how authors use character interactions to tell stories is key to understanding novels. This week, the kids looked closely at how characters acted and responded to each other, and how that can teach them about the characters, the story, the world of the story, or even about their own lives. Writing: Writing took a back seat this week so we could practice and review for our geometry test. Math: Adding and subtracting mixed numbers is a tough job, but the class did a pretty good job this week! We aren't quite there yet, and we'll be coming back to it after spring break, but they had a great start. Science: We spent this week reviewing for our geometry test, and took the Social Studies: Jobs and employment were on our minds this week in social studies. The kids got to look through a massive list of jobs, pick which ones might be right for them, and learn a little about what it means to be employed and how to get there. Announcements:
This was another great week in fourth grade! I think we're all the way back on track after all those snow days. The kids are back into the routine again and making some real progress. We officially end the third quarter this week, which means that we are coming into the home stretch for this year and getting ready to buckle down for a strong finish. Reading: Reading this week focused on sequence of events. Most stories are told in chronological order, and the kids worked on finding examples of that in the books they are reading. Writing: We have been finishing biographies this week and got some extra practice in identifying nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Math: The class is still working with fractions, and starting to get into the heavier stuff. We're dealing with mixed numbers and improper fractions now, and for the most part the kids seem to be hanging in there. Science: The last of our geometry unit was this week. We'll be practicing and studying next week for a test on FRIDAY! Social Studies: Economics is still our focus here, and this week we looked at how jobs and employment can affect states and cities. We looked at ghost towns of Michigan and made their stories . Announcements:
We had a great week, a week where we had five full days of school with no subs or interruptions. I had a great time, and I hope the kids did too. We had the governor come in and read today, which was a great honor for our school. Reading: The class used this week to practice using context clues to determine the meanings of words they didn't know. I continue to be impressed by their level of thought and the drive that they have to improve their reading skills. Writing: Biographies are due in one week! We have been spending lots of time writing a practice one as a class, so they should know what to do! Remember that the poster AND the packet are both due on Friday but can be turned in early. Math: Fractions are upon us! This week we did a little review before we move on to the harder areas like adding and subtracting mixed numbers and improper fractions. Science: We are still on a geometry break from science. This week we learned all about shapes, their names, and their properties. Social Studies: Economics is still our focus here, and this week we specifically concentrated on the ideas of importing and exporting. |
