Math:
This week we got all the way to the biggest numbers we'll be working with. They are multiplying numbers in the thousands by one digit numbers, and also multiplying 2 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers. Hard stuff! Next week we're going to be tackling word problems with the goal of finishing up multiplication for good by Thanksgiving. Science: It's time for a new unit! We've moved from learning about energy to learning about the Earth. This week we talked about fossils and what we can learn about them. Talk to your kids about what a fossil is and how they can teach us about what the past was like, they should be able to tell you! Announcements:
Welcome to the first Friday newsletter! It's taken so long for this to get going because I'm just now finally finding a routine and figuring out how to fit in everything I need to between the new school rules, virtual classroom, and everything else. I'll be using this newsletter to communicate announcements for the class, as well as a little overview of what we've been doing this week. The only announcement for next week is that we'll be doing a Veteran's day celebration on Wednesday. Usually the school does a whole big get together in the gym, but that's out this year. Instead there will be activities and displays put up around the school for Wednesday. Math: In math we have been learning multiplication. So far we've been practicing the area model method, but on Thursday the kids also learned the place value method and are able to try out the algorithm if they want. They have been keeping up with the work and really putting in a lot of effort, I've been very proud of all of them. Science: This week we wrapped up our Energy unit with a review and a test on everything we've learned so far. Thanks for all the practice you did at home to get the students ready. Those who were putting in the effort did some great work! Still can't go do everything you want because of lockdown? Looking for something to do? Every Monday I'll be posting an activity for the week. Your student can do the activity, send me pictures, and I will show everything off in a video on Friday! Check back here for a new short video every Monday and Friday. Your student has graduated 4th grade, so these have no bearing whatsoever on school. They are just fun activities that they can do if they are looking for something to do. Project 1 - Terrarium Having trouble getting to the Social Studies work? Here's a video explaining it.
These are the packets that consist of all the work we will be doing until the end of the year. Warning: They are huge and take a lot of paper. On Monday (the next day I can get into the school) I will be printing these off and mailing them to every family. You are still free to print these or use them however you want, but they ended up being so big that I'm going to send paper versions to you and you can decide what to do with them from there.
As we move forward, I am trying to make learning more effective from home. I am going to use Microsoft Teams to assign and track work and learning. The kids are used to using teams, so I hope it won't be too hard. There is a survey up on Teams right now that will give me an idea of how to structure lessons from home. Please have your kids go there and fill out the survey. If they are not sure how, I have attached a video below to explain. If they need help with their username and password, please contact me. Hello parents!
I have updated my site with work for every single day in each of the 4 main subjects, with a book report for writing. Click on the links in the blue bar above this post to find printable work that your student can work on. This work is not required, but I do recommend that your student either do this or the online work so that all of their hard work is not lost. Moby Max has been updated to specifically give lessons related to what we have learned or would be learning if we were in school. Visiting each of the subject areas should give a new lesson every day. Again, please contact me with any questions. This is a list of things that can be worked on while students are out of school. Nothing is mandatory, but if you are looking to keep your student working hard, this is what they can do. If your student was not in school on Friday, they may not have everything on this list. Please feel free to email me or send me a remind message with any questions. I can provide more work if you need it. [email protected] Book Report – All instructions are in the packet. Moby Max will give them a choice of different subjects. You can work with your student to see what they feel they need to work on the most. I have it set up to give them a placement test to see what they need to work on in each subject, and then it will assign appropriate lessons as your student completes them. I have set up Prodigy to review math with them. It will go through all of the skills we have learned this year so far. Math Skill Review Packet This is paper and pencil work that covers everything we have learned this year. |
